India temple crash: Death toll reaches 35

The death toll from the floor fall at a Hindu temple in India had increased to 35 on Friday while rescue efforts continued.

“There are 35 fatalities. There is still one individual absent. Rescue efforts are ongoing,” told Indore district judge Ilayaraja T. over the phone to AFP.

After the floor covering the stepwell’s fell in Indore’s center city, more than 25 worshippers dove into the stair-lined common water source.

Narottam Mishra, the home minister for Madhya Pradesh, informed reporters that “police recovered 11 bodies from the well and two people succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.”

Mishra stated that the incident had been investigated and that the surviving families would receive compensation.

Rescue attempts are still underway, according to police official Manish Kapooriya, who also said that the wounded have been transferred to public hospitals for treatment.

Emergency personnel were seen in television video using cables and ladders to reach people stuck in the Madhya Pradesh state well.

Other recordings showed the collapsed floor, bent steel rods, and police officers rope-sealing the space.

On the occassion of Ram Navami, the birthday of the Hindu god Lord Ram, temples all over India were packed with worshippers.
