Indonesia: One-year jail term considered for extra-marital affair

Indonesia is likely to introduce a law punishable by one year in prison for unmarried couples living together and having extramarital relationships.

Indonesia is considering implementing the law whose first attempt failed in 2019 due to violent public protests but this time the government has claimed that the law has been relaxed.

The new bill has proposed a one-year jail term for unmarried couples living together and having extramarital relationships but the condition of the law has been relaxed compared to the 2019 draft.

Under the relaxation of this law, only close relatives such as parents, husband, wife and children could file a complaint about extra-marital relations. Not everyone will have the right to do so.

Similarly, the punishment for insulting the King of Indonesia was also kept and the most uproar was also on this clause in 2019 but this time only the president will be able to file a complaint about insulting the president in the clause.

“Parliament will have a plenary session to ratify the rules,” said Bambing Varianto, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and head of the parliamentary commission overseeing the review of the law.
