Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has confirmed that Threads, Meta’s new text-based app, will soon have a direct messaging (DM) feature, allowing users to chat with each other. The app’s launch earlier this month piqued interest as it offered a fresh way of expressing thoughts and a potential alternative to Twitter, which has been facing declining interest.
In an earlier interview, Mosseri clarified that Threads is not intended to replace Twitter but rather to serve as a “public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter.”
The absence of DMs on Threads initially surprised users, but Mosseri’s confirmation indicates that the feature is being addressed in response to user requests. He discussed the team’s priorities, emphasizing the need to enable communication within the app.
Threads also started implementing a Twitter-like feature for select users, organizing their feeds into “Following” and “For You” views, presenting a mix of posts from followed profiles and recommended accounts in the latter view, while the former displays posts exclusively from followed users in chronological order.
