An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has extended the interim bail of PTI leader Asad Umar, as well as party chairman Imran Khan’s two sisters and other suspects until October 4. The cases are related to violent incidents that occurred on May 9.
The arrest of Imran Khan on May 9 in the Al-Qadir Trust case led to widespread violence and attacks on important military installations, resulting in a severe crackdown on his party by the state.
While Imran Khan was released a few days later (he has since been rearrested in a separate case), many PTI workers and top-tier leadership members were rounded up, and they continue to face court proceedings on serious charges.
In September, a Lahore ATC allowed the police to re-interrogate several PTI leaders and activists in different cases related to the May 9 riots after new offenses of mutiny and waging war against the state were added to the FIRs.
The ATC extended the interim bail of Asad Umar, Imran Khan’s sisters Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, and other suspects, and requested the complete record of the investigation from the police. The next hearing will involve arguments from the lawyers.
