Interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar participated in the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) opening session in New York on Tuesday.

The opening session of the UNGA was inaugurated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

During his visit to New York, the caretaker Prime Minister had a busy schedule, including delivering a speech at the Global Development Initiative and Sustainable Development Goals summit.

In his address, PM Kakar was expected to present Pakistan’s perspective on various regional and global issues, including the long-standing Kashmir dispute on the UN agenda. Additionally, he was likely to elaborate on the government’s significant efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s economic recovery and attract domestic and international investments.

On the sidelines of the ongoing UNGA session, PM Kakar held a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized the strong fraternal relations between the two neighboring nations and Pakistan’s commitment to further enhance these ties, with a focus on economic cooperation.

He highlighted initiatives such as the border marketplace’s recent inauguration, emphasizing their positive impact on the economic development of border areas.

PM Kakar also stressed the alignment of President Raisi’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy with Pakistan’s vision for regional development and connectivity.

He emphasized the importance of both countries leveraging their geographical locations to promote shared objectives of regional peace, prosperity, and enhanced regional connectivity through increased trade.

Additionally, PM Kakar was expected to hold meetings with other global leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and attend a banquet hosted by US President Joe Biden for world leaders.

During his stay in the US, the caretaker Prime Minister planned to participate in an important conference on climate change, engage with international media, and visit prominent US think tanks.

The overarching theme for the 78th UNGA session is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.”

PM Kakar’s official trip to the US, which began on September 17, included a series of engagements with world leaders and participation in key events at the UNGA. He was scheduled to address the UNGA on September 22.

It was previously mentioned by the PM Secretariat that during his visit from September 18 to 23, PM Kakar would be among the guests attending US President Joe Biden’s traditional reception on the inaugural day of the summit at the American Museum of National History near the UN Headquarters in Manhattan.
