Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of pressure, says US secretary of state

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic lever of pressure amidst the escalating regional conflict.

Speaking shortly before his departure to the Philippines to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Rubio addressed reporters regarding the ongoing hostilities. He emphasised that the United States remains constantly prepared to engage in diplomacy to resolve the confrontation with Tehran, but underscored that such diplomatic efforts must be genuine and legally binding.

The secretary of state pointed out that if Iran continuously violates the provisions of an agreement, that specific framework cannot remain viable or effective. He noted that Washington has made repeated diplomatic attempts with Tehran and intends to keep channels open if a productive path emerges.

Rubio directly accused factions within Iran of attempting to seize control of the critical maritime corridor to exert leverage over the international community. While affirming that the United States will persist in deploying necessary measures to safeguard global commercial shipping, he issued a distinct call to action for international partners.

Rubio stressed that other nations must step forward to share the security burden, explicitly calling for contributions in the form of military equipment, hardware, or financial assistance to protect the vital trade route.
