Iran sanctions UK and EU officials

Iran has announced several sanctions for European Union and British officials and entities on the accusation of supporting terrorism.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that sanctions are imposed on 23 people and 9 entities, including well-known politicians, military leaders, and media organizations.

The statement from the foreign minister said, “Due to their deliberate support for terrorism and terrorist organizations as well as incitement to terrorism, violence, and hatred that has fueled riots, violence, terrorist acts, and human rights violations, the foreign ministry imposes sanctions on the EU officials and entities.”

The Iranian action comes shortly after new sanctions were announced against Iran by EU foreign ministers amid months-long protests there.

The sanctioned British military officials include Ken McCallum, chief of the UK’s spy agency MI5; Tony Radakin, UK’s chief of the defence staff; and Robert Jenrich, the minister of state for immigration.

The British Committee for Iran Freedom, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, the Royal Air Force Menwith Hill, the UK Naval Support Facility in Bahrain, and other British organizations had also been sanctioned.

Other than that German politicians, former French lawmakers, and Bernard Kouchner, the co-founder of Médecins Sans Frontières, are among the EU individuals who received sanctions (MSF).

Additionally, sanctions were placed on two German firms, Water Engineering Trading GmbH and Gidlemeister Projekte GmbH, for manufacturing chemical weapons used by former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war.

The most recent round of sanctions also targeted media organizations like Radio Farda, Radio Free Europe’s Persian service in Prague, Radio Zamaneh in Amsterdam, and the contentious French weekly Charlie Hebdo.
