Iran sentences former president’s daughter to five years in jail

Activist Faezeh Hashmi who is the daughter of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has been sentenced to five years in jail.

According to the semi-official ISNA news agency, Hashemi was charged by Tehran’s public prosecutor last year on charges of propaganda against the system.

Defence lawyer Neda Shams also confirmed by writing on her Twitter account, “Following the arrest of Ms. Faezeh Hashemi, she was sentenced to five years in prison but the sentence is not final.”

Earlier in September, she was detained for inciting riots in Tehran during demonstrations brought on by the passing of a young Kurdish woman while in police custody.

Earlier, Faezeh Hashemi received a prison sentence and a lifetime ban from participating in politics in 2012 for anti-state propaganda originating from the contested 2009 presidential election.

Meanwhile, her father former president Rafsanjani’s during his lifetime had pragmatic policies of economic liberalization and improved ties with the West drew fervent fans and equally fervent detractors. He was one of the founders of the Islamic Republic.
