Ishaq Dar meets Saarc Chief, discusses regional ties

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) process during a meeting with Saarc Secretary-General Golam Sarwar in Islamabad.

The meeting focused on regional cooperation, economic connectivity and strengthening ties among South Asian countries.

Ishaq Dar praised Golam Sarwar’s efforts to promote cooperation within the regional bloc. He said Pakistan remains committed to supporting the Saarc framework and its objectives.

The foreign minister called for a revitalised Saarc based on the organisation’s charter. He said stronger cooperation among member states can help improve regional connectivity, encourage sustainable development and support economic growth.

Dar highlighted the potential of South Asia, saying the region has significant human and economic resources that can be better utilised through collective efforts.

Saarc Secretary-General Golam Sarwar appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting regional and global peace. He also thanked Islamabad for its continued support for Saarc institutions.

The meeting took place as Saarc faces challenges due to political differences among its member states. Relations between Pakistan and India have remained a major factor affecting the progress of the organisation.

The regional group has not held a summit since 2014. The 2016 summit planned in Islamabad was postponed after India withdrew from the meeting.

According to Saarc rules, a summit requires participation from all member countries.

During the meeting, Ishaq Dar also extended his best wishes to Golam Sarwar as he completed his tenure as Saarc secretary-general.

Separately, the foreign minister met Pakistan’s Ambassador-designate to Nepal Aamir Khan and congratulated him on his appointment.

Dar stressed the importance of expanding Pakistan-Nepal relations through cooperation in trade, tourism, education and cultural exchanges.
