Islamabad becomes battleground on Imran’s court appearance

The federal capital, Islamabad, presented scenes of battleground as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister reached the Islamabad toll plaza of the motorway M-2 to appear before the court in the Toshakhana case.

The police had blocked the roads by placing containers, apparently to stop PTI supporters from accompanying the convoy. Section 144 was also imposed in the federal capital under which assembly of more than four persons was prohibited.

There were fired shells of tear gas by police to disperse the people who had gathered there. The police also claimed that there were shells fired upon them by the PTI supporters.

The Capitol Police has said that protesters belonging to PTI were shelling at the judicial complex and setting fire to a police outpost.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan said that PTI workers resorted to unprovoked stone pelting on the police but the police were showing restraint.

Islamabad Police said in a statement on Twitter that PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s convoy was located right in front of the judicial complex and political workers were requested to clear the way so that Imran Khan could reach the court.

On the other hand, in a statement issued on Twitter, PTI claimed that heavy shelling was being done by the police on PTI Chairman Imran Khan on the Srinagar Highway.

IG Islamabad said that all coordination was done through Shibli Faraz, Imran Khan’s chief of staff, but the police fired tear gas shells after the PTI workers pelted stones. He said that the police were exercising restraint and did not have weapons.

Akbar Nasir Khan said that there was not even a distance of 100 meters from the court, Imran Khan should come to the court and complete the court proceedings. He said that the shells have also been fired toward the police, which was surprising. He added that they were investigating the matter.

IG Islamabad further said that the only thing was that the former prime minister had to appear in the court and present his stand. The procedure of the police was in front of everyone, the police is adopting patience and tolerance.
