Islamabad Court to decide on extension of Shahbaz Gill’s remand

PTI leader Shahbaz Gill is to appear before an Islamabad district and sessions court today for the hearing of a sedition charge brought against him on Monday.

Gill was arrested on August 9 near Banigala Chowk on suspicion of stirring up public unrest against the Pakistan Army’s ranks and files by making some comments on a TV program.

The PTI claims that Gill was “tortured” while incarcerated and was not physically fit to be taken into remand, but the police insist on taking him into jail so they may conduct additional investigation.

The condition of Gill, who had complained of breathing problems and had undergone numerous medical tests and examinations, had been pronounced “not okay” by the court.

He was ordered to remain at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) till Monday for a further evaluation of his health.

When the hearing resumes on Monday, the court will examine Gill’s medical records and determine whether or not to place Gill on physical remand in response to the police’s plea.

On Monday morning, an armoured truck pulled up at PIMS to transport Gill from the hospital to court. The police had asked for an eight-day extension on Gill’s physical remand at the case’s previous hearing on Friday.
