Senior lawyer and human rights activist Hina Jilani has said the judiciary had failed to play its role towards enforcement of human rights in the country.

Speaking at the Lahore Literary Festival on Sunday, Jilani said that the judiciary had been unable to hold all those responsible accountable for the crime of enforced disappearances. She added that carrying on the fight for rights was crucial as authoritarian regimes feared it.

Jilani expressed remorse that people who used to support the fight for rights were dwindling. She said that democracy had always faced challenges in the country as there had been periods of great mobilization followed by times of frustration.

The rights activist lamented the lack of support from the public towards the struggle of human rights saying that “we are watching as if a cricket match is going on”.

Jilani said that anything outside the realm of democracy would be unacceptable. She said the nation must also fight against social retrogression as everyone was a part of the stake-holders.

The senior lawyer also touched upon the civil-military imbalance in the country saying that its effects weren’t limited to just political parties, but it also affected the people.
