Rights movement Karachi Bachao Tehreek has claimed that one of its organizers was sexually assaulted before the recently held ‘People’s Climate March’ in Karachi.

In a tweet on Monday, Karachi Bacho Tehreek stated that one of its organizers, a trans woman, was abducted and subjected to sexual assault the night before the ‘People’s Climate March’ held in Karachi on December 12.

The Karachi Bachao Tehreek has stated that the said organizer was tortured and sexually assaulted for information about the march and its speeches.

The movement has said that the march was focused on the demands of the working class people in Karachi and included many groups from “indigenous communities” who had been dispossessed from their homes.

It further stated that it was “worth noting that this police violence was disproportionately directed towards a trans woman and that sexual violence was weaponized against one of the most vulnerable members of the organizing team to extort information”.

On December 12, activists took out the ‘People’s Climate March’ near Karachi’s Boat Basin to bring attention to the harmful impact of climate change, and specifically the impact of deforestation and destruction of agricultural land to make way for mega housing projects.

The march included activists from 10 political parties and civil society organizations, and participants also intended to move towards the Bilawal House but were stopped by police.
