KARACHI: Karachi Port has recorded a major milestone by surpassing 2,000 vessel calls in a single fiscal year for the first time in nearly eight years, signaling a steady recovery and expansion in Pakistan’s maritime trade activity.

According to data shared by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the port handled a total of 2,003 vessel arrivals between July 2025 and June 13, 2026. This marks the first time since the 2017–18 fiscal year that the port has crossed the 2,000-ship threshold.

Officials said the vessels collectively represented a gross registered tonnage (GRT) of 84.43 million tons, reflecting the substantial scale of cargo movement processed through Pakistan’s largest seaport.

Growth in maritime activity

The minister noted that vessel traffic increased by 7.5 percent compared to the same period last year, while gross registered tonnage rose by 3.0 percent. The steady upward trend highlights sustained growth in import and export activity, as well as improved utilization of port infrastructure.

He said the performance demonstrates strengthening momentum in Pakistan’s maritime trade and reinforces Karachi Port’s critical role as the country’s primary gateway for international commerce, handling a significant share of national shipping operations.

Operational efficiency and confidence from shipping lines

KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd) Shahid Ahmed attributed the improvement to higher shipping activity, enhanced operational efficiency, and continued confidence from international shipping lines using Karachi Port.

Established in 1887, Karachi Port remains a key maritime hub for containerized cargo, bulk goods, and general freight, connecting Pakistan with major regional and global trade routes.

Positive outlook for trade sector

Minister Chaudhry described the rise in vessel calls as a positive indicator for Pakistan’s broader trade outlook, reflecting improved commercial activity and better use of port facilities.

He added that the achievement reflects ongoing efforts by KPT to modernize operations, strengthen maritime connectivity, and attract investment in logistics and port-related sectors.
