The Sunni Ulema Council’s Mufti Abdul Qayum was shot dead in Block-9 of the community by unidentified males riding pillion on a motorbike, according to Jauhar police.

The tragedy happened at 7 am and the body was transferred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center to complete the necessary paperwork. Zubair Nazeer Sheikh, the East-SSP, stated that it seemed to be a targeted killing.

He said that the Mufti Qayum was shot once in the head from close range by pillion riders who then escaped while the scholar was on foot. According to the SSP, the victim was connected to eminent Islamic scholar Mufti Munib ur Rehman.

Mufti Munib has condemned the incident in a statement, saying that Allama Sufi Abdul Qayum was a well-known religious scholar. The victim was Khateeb, who was also the director of the Islamic Center and Jamia Masjid Muhammadia Noorania in Architect Society, Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

A former instructor at Jamia Anwarul Quran in the Gulshan-i-Iqbal seminary, he was also the head of the Ladies Islamic Mission University in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. He was shot in the head as he accepted martyrdom while he was returning home after offering his Fajr prayers in the mosque.

At Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Block-8, the APP Society allegedly gave written permission to Saylani Welfare International Trust to build a mosque. This is according to Mufti Munib. According to the statement, because the trust built the mosque and chose its imam/Khateeb, certain individuals launched a campaign to “take control” of the mosque.

In the statement, he claimed that although “God knows better,” “it is being reported” that a Qabza group (land robbers) connected to a mosque in APP Society was responsible for the murder.

Mufti Munib said, “Allama Sufi Abdul Qayum was a gentleman, soft-spoken, and muttaqi (pious) guy.
