Karachi robbers use distractions to steal from motorists

Karachi has witnessed a rise in a new type of street crime in which criminals deliberately create arguments with motorists before stealing their valuables. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, as several similar incidents have recently been reported in different parts of the city.

According to police officials, the suspects often pose as book vendors or roadside sellers and wait for vehicles to stop at busy traffic signals. They then intentionally provoke drivers by accusing them of hitting them or damaging their belongings. The sudden confrontation distracts the victim, giving other members of the group an opportunity to commit theft.

In one reported incident near the Allah Wala Signal on Shahrah-e-Quaideen, a suspect allegedly struck a parked vehicle and claimed that the driver had caused the damage. During the heated exchange, the suspect damaged the vehicle’s side window, forcing the driver to focus on the argument. As the driver lowered the window to question the man, another accomplice approached the vehicle from behind and repeatedly banged on the rear of the car to create further confusion.

When the driver turned around to see what was happening behind the vehicle, another member of the group quickly reached into the car, snatched the victim’s mobile phone, and fled the scene. The suspects escaped before the victim could react or seek immediate assistance.

Police said that multiple incidents involving similar tactics have been reported in recent weeks. Investigators believe the suspects operate in groups, with each member assigned a specific role to distract, confuse, and rob unsuspecting motorists within seconds.

Officials also revealed that another variation of the scheme involves criminals deliberately dirtying a vehicle’s windshield using a wire or other object. When the driver stops or becomes distracted, the suspects initiate an argument or create a disturbance, allowing accomplices to steal mobile phones, wallets, or other valuables from inside the vehicle.

Law enforcement agencies have advised motorists to remain cautious when approached by strangers at traffic signals or on busy roads. Drivers are encouraged to keep vehicle doors locked, windows rolled up, and valuables out of sight. If confronted by suspicious individuals, citizens should avoid engaging in arguments and instead move to a safe location before contacting the police. Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in these organized street crime activities.
