Khyber Pakhtunkhwa begins constitutional process for appointment of caretaker CM

The constitutional process for the appointment of a caretaker chief minister started after the dissolution of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Ghulam Ali directed Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and Opposition Leader Akram Khan Durrani to suggest a name for the caretaker chief minister through consultation.

Opposition leader and Chief Minister Mahmood Khan will give three names for the caretaker chief minister, if there is no consensus on any one name between the two within three days, then the matter of the selection of the chief minister will go to the parliamentary committee.

As per reports, the speaker of the provincial assembly will form a parliamentary party of six members while the committee will have three members each from the government and the opposition.

If the committee did not agree on one name for the caretaker chief minister within three days, then the matter will go to the Election Commission after which the Election Commission will select one of the proposed names and announce it as caretaker chief minister and the caretaker chief minister will perform the duties till the election of the new chief minister.

Earlier in 2018, the election commission had appointed Justice (retd) Dost Muhammad as caretaker chief minister after the then Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and the leader of the opposition did not agree on a single name for the caretaker chief minister.
