His remarks, delivered during a memorial ceremony in Pyongyang, have drawn renewed attention to the secretive role of North Korean troops in the conflict.

Speaking at the unveiling of a monument dedicated to fallen soldiers, Kim described those who detonated grenades to avoid capture as “heroes” who demonstrated the highest form of loyalty. According to state media, he portrayed such actions as acts of ultimate devotion, reflecting the military’s deeply ingrained doctrine that surrender is unacceptable under any circumstances.

The comments appear to confirm long-standing allegations from intelligence agencies and defectors that North Korean troops are instructed to take extreme measures, including suicide, to avoid being captured by enemy forces. Analysts say this approach aligns with Pyongyang’s strict military code, where being taken prisoner is considered an act of betrayal against the state.

Estimates from South Korean officials suggest that as many as 15,000 North Korean personnel have been deployed to support Russia, particularly in efforts to regain territory in the Kursk region. Casualty figures are believed to be significant, with thousands reportedly killed, though neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has officially acknowledged these numbers.

The memorial event was attended by senior Russian officials, including Defence Minister Andrey Belousov and parliamentary speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, highlighting the growing military and political alignment between the two countries. Their presence underscored the strengthening partnership that has developed since the early stages of the war.

Reports from earlier this year added further weight to claims about battlefield practices. Testimonies from captured North Korean soldiers suggested that many troops had indeed followed orders to end their lives rather than surrender. Documents reportedly recovered from deceased soldiers also indicated similar instructions.

Kim’s speech extended beyond those who took their own lives, as he also paid tribute to soldiers who died in combat. He framed their actions as patriotic sacrifices made in defense of national honor and loyalty to the ruling party, reinforcing the regime’s narrative of unwavering commitment.

The deepening cooperation between North Korea and Russia follows a landmark agreement signed in 2024 between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The pact includes mutual support in the event of external aggression and has paved the way for expanded military and economic collaboration. In addition to troops, North Korea has reportedly pledged to send laborers to assist in reconstruction efforts in Russian-controlled areas.
