On June 21st, 2023, World Music Day was celebrated around the globe. However, many local singers and musicians seemed to be unaware of this international observance. Several local singers from Lahore were contacted to gauge their awareness, and it was found that they were completely devoted to their art, but were unaware of the designated day to celebrate their craft on a global scale.
World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, is an annual event celebrated in various countries on June 21st. It is a day dedicated to promoting the importance of music and its cultural and social impact. The day originated in France in 1982 and has since spread to over 120 countries, including Pakistan.
The fact that many local singers and musicians in Lahore were unaware of World Music Day raises questions about the level of awareness and promotion of such international observances within the local music community. While these artists remain deeply connected to their craft and are passionate about their music, the lack of information about global celebrations of their art form is concerning.
International observances like World Music Day serve as platforms to highlight the significance of music in society, encourage artistic expression, and foster cultural exchange. Local music communities must be aware of such events, as they provide opportunities for artists to showcase their talent, collaborate with musicians from different backgrounds, and gain exposure on a global scale.
Efforts should be made to bridge the gap between local musicians and international observances like World Music Day. Promoting awareness among artists and providing them with platforms to participate and celebrate their art on a global stage can contribute to the growth and recognition of the local music scene. By encouraging participation and recognizing the talent of local musicians, we can further enrich the cultural fabric of our society and strengthen the global music community as a whole.
