Two coal-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 1,650 megawatts (MW) of energy generation have been operational in Tharparker, transforming the desert into an economic powerhouse. The projects, which include the 1,320MW Shanghai Electric power plant and the 330MW Thal Nova power plant, will produce 11.24 billion units of low-cost energy each year. The direct investment of $3.53 billion in these projects will increase coal-based electricity production in Thar by up to 3,300MW.
The prime minister declared the day a moment of joy” for the country because the Tharparkar desert was obtaining a “supply of basic utilities for life. He ignored certain people’s criticism of Thar’s coal, calling it a blessing with enormous potential for power resources that needed to be explored.
