Law Minister introduced SC practice and procedure bill in Senate

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar introduced the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 on Thursday in the Senate to deny the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) the authority to take suo motu notice in an individual capacity.

After a few changes made by the Standing Committee on Law and Justice, the law was adopted by the federal cabinet on March 28 and by the National Assembly a day later.

It is anticipated that the Supreme Court may reject the measure since the proposed changes to the Supreme Court’s guidelines have aroused new discussion in political and legal circles.

Today, when the bill was introduced in the Senate, there was considerable opposition from PTI lawmakers.

“As time goes on, you have to go through different periods and face different conducts to govern institutions,” Tarar said when introducing the bill in the Senate today.

He said, “Law never stands still. To ensure that the legislation works by the needs of the populace in the modern era, you must leave room for amendments.”

The law minister stated, “In the previous two decades, a new tendency was observed at the Supreme Court, instead of being managed by collective thought, the court evolved into a servant to one individual.”
