Lawyer body calls on ex-CJ Gulzar to turn down caretaker PM offer

SHBCA says former CJ’s acceptance will be equal to illegal, unconstitutional move by speaker, PTI govt

The Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) has urged Justice (R) Gulzar Ahmed to turn down Prime Minister Imran Khan’s proposition of assuming control as the caretaker prime minister and to hold fresh elections in the country.

In a press release issued on Monday, the association expressed concern saying it was “troubled” by the nomination of the former chief justice as caretaker PM.

The association argued that Ahmed had retired only two months back. It said that the “ill-considered nomination” would reinforce opinion that the “Imran Khan government has been on the ‘same page’ as the apex judiciary”.

The press release further stated that if Ahmed accepted his appointment as a caretaker prime minister, “it would be tantamount to endorsing the brazenly illegal and unconstitutional acts of the speaker and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government”.

In the same statement, the association also called on the Supreme Court (SC) to constitute a full court bench, calling the speaker’s decision illegal and unconstitutional.

The apex court is currently hearing a case against the deputy speaker’s decision to block the vote of no-confidence.

The SHCBA also announced a strike of court proceedings on Tuesday.
