LG polls in Balochistan on May 29

The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced local government elections in Balochistan on May 29.

As per the schedule issued by the ECP, the willing contestants could file nomination papers with the returning officers from 15 April 2022 to 18 April 2022. After thorough scrutiny by the Election Commission of Pakistan, on19 April, the final list of the nominated candidates would be released while as per schedule. The local government elections would be held on 29 May in 32 districts of Balochistan with exception of the Quetta and Lasbella districts.

There are 838 union councils in these 32 districts whereas the number of rural wards is 5,345 and urban wards are 914. There are seven municipal corporations and 60 municipal committees. It may be mentioned here that a day earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan rejected the application filed by the Balochistan government seeking a delay in the LG polls for at least six months. Earlier, the division bench of the Balochistan High Court, finding no plausible reason in the plea filed by the provincial government, directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to go to the polls as per the announced schedule.

As many as 4,011,096 registered voters will cast their votes in the local government elections. Out of the total, 2,282,942 are male voters and 1,728,154 are female. They will vote for seven municipal corporations, 49 municipal committees and 838 union councils.
