The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the federal government to provide information on the Toshakhana gifts that political leaders and bureaucrats have received from foreign dignitaries since 1947.
In recent days, the department had been in the news due to proceedings against former Prime Minister Imran Khan for not providing information about Toshakhana gifts and money from their purported sale, as well as his final disqualification for making false statements and erroneous disclosure.
The court ordered the submission of details by January 16.
The rulings were issued after Justice Asim Hafeez took up a request for court orders requesting the disclosure of information on individuals/officials who acquired the assets after making a payment in addition to information about the specifics of Toshkhana gifts.
Sheraz Zaka, the government’s attorney, said during today’s hearing that information about Toshakhana is classified and could not be made public.
The court then asked how the information could remain a secret. The judge asked for a report from the federal government, directing them to provide the details to the court and the court will decide whether or not they are classified.
Following the hearing, PTI leader Pervez Khattak tweeted that the high court had requested the full record of gifts given to Toshakhana and asked, “What’s there to conceal in it? Why hold yourself to a different standard?
Entire record of Toshakhana should be shared with HC. What’s there to hide in it. Why different standards for yourself ? pic.twitter.com/QE1x4GyHxC
