United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called on the main carbon emitting countries to immediately start cutting down on emissions to avert a climate catastrophe.

In a tweet, the UN chief said that countries needed to accelerate ending reliance on fossil fuel addiction and speed up the use of clean renewable energy.

He said the time to act was now adding that every second was valuable in stopping a climate crisis.

Guterres’s statements came with his message for the International Earth Day, which is observed on April 22 annually.

“The Earth is facing a triple planetary crisis. Climate disruption. Nature and biodiversity loss. Pollution and waste. This triple crisis is threatening the well-being and survival of millions of people around the world,” the UN sec-gen said in his message.

Guterres said that the world came together 50 years ago for the Stockholm Conference which started the global environmental movement. He said the move showed what humanity was capable of when it acted as one.

“We have shrunk the ozone hole. We have expanded protections for wildlife and ecosystems. We have ended the use of leaded fuel, preventing millions of premature deaths. And just last month, we launched a landmark global effort to prevent and end plastic pollution. We have proven that together we can tackle monumental challenges. And the right to a healthy environment is gaining traction,” he said.
