Maulvi Abdul Kabir appointed new Prime Minister of Afghanistan

Maulvi Abdul Kabir has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Taliban supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada appointed Maulvi Abdul Kabir as the new interim prime minister.

Maulvi Abdul Kabir will take over as prime minister temporarily in place of Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund.

As per reports by Afghan media said that Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund had been ill for some time and was unable to perform official duties, due to which he had been replaced by Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs Maulvi Abdul Kabir as Prime Minister of Afghanistan.

It should be mentioned that Akhund had been the Taliban government’s prime minister ever since the group regained control in 2021.

Despite the Taliban’s leadership withholding information on Akhund’s condition, a press report quoting sources said that he was suffering from heart disease.

Maulvi Kabir is claimed to be a member of the Zadran tribe and hails from the eastern Paktika province. From 1996 until 2001, he presided as the province of Nangarhar’s governor under the Taliban’s previous government.

He is one of the most senior Taliban figures that contributed significantly to the talks with the US in Qatar that led to the Taliban and the US signing the Doha Agreement.
