Pakistan has witnessed an increase in militant attacks in the country that matched with the Taliban’s military campaign in Afghanistan starting in May 2021 and peaking in August 2021 with the seizure of the capital Kabul, revealed a study carried out by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Study (PICSS).

Forty five attacks were carried out in the month of August in the past, the highest number of attacks recorded in a month, the report says.

The general number of attacks by the militants remained the same in spite of a ceasefire agreed upon between the government and the militants from November 10 to December 10.

The country also witnessed an increase in the average number of attacks going from 16 in 2020 to 25 in 2021, the highest number recorded since 2017.

The PICSS database also reported that Balochistan was established as the most conflict-ridden province recording a total of 170 deaths in 103 attacks. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s tribal districts were the second most turbulent region in the country reporting a death toll of 117 in 103 attacks, it added.

The institute said that security forces also intensified their anti-militant operations. Security forces stepped up their actions by 40 percent, compared to their operations in 2020, it added. A total of 205 operations were conducted during which 188 militants were killed and 220 arrested.
