Murder suspect dies of police ‘torture’

A man who allegedly accompanied his friend and killed his brother for stopping him from selling drugs died due to alleged torture in the lockup of Hanjarwal police on Thursday.

Police took the suspect, Naveed, to the hospital after his condition deteriorated in the lockup but he died on the way to the hospital. Naveed was on physical remand with the police till September 3. “We were taking Naveed to hospital for medical care but he breathed his last on the way,” said a police official while talking to Minute Mirror. When asked if he was tortured in police custody, he said that “there was no sign of torture on his body”.

Meanwhile, Sadar SP [investigation] Dr. Raza Tanvir said, “We have shifted the body to the morgue for autopsy and the cause of death will be determined as soon as the medical report comes.”

Last week, the police arrested Naveed over his alleged role in the murder of Faizan Zulfiqar. According to the FIR registered with Hanjarwal police under Section 302 and Section 34 of Pakistan Penal Code, 1860, on August 22, Mohsin, the main suspect, along with two unidentified accomplices who shot his own brother and died at home just after he stopped him from getting himself involved in drug peddling in the area.

Khalida Bibi, the suspect’s mother, became the complainant and revealed that her son Mohsin was involved in the illegal business but his brother Faizan was not happy with him and asked him to give up. This led Mohsin to kill his brother.
