NA Standing Committee approves Practice and Procedure bill

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice approved the Practice and Procedure Bill, 2023.

During the meeting of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly, the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Bill 2023 was reviewed.

The Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that yesterday the National Assembly said that no law should be challenged, the bill was referred to the committee for consideration. He said that the purpose of the bill was to take transparent action in the highest court.

Tarar said that important cases were not heard for upto six months while voices also came from within the Supreme Court. He added that it was time for parliament to legislate on it now.

On this occasion, Nafeesa Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) said that they were all worried about this current situation. She said that there was a suo motu notice every day and it needed to be regulated.

PPP leader said that some questions were being raised that this bill should not be abolished by suo moto tomorrow.

The law minister said that the indiscriminate use of 184/3 started from 2007/08, after Iftikhar Chaudhry, three judges refrained from taking suo motu notice, then Saqib Nisar used the suo motu notice. He said that the voice was raised that there should not be a one-man show, in recent days two judges have also decided about it.

Azam Nazir Tarar said that the committee proposed in the bill will regulate the matter, for two years you have not seen two senior judges in any bench.

Later, the Standing Committee on Law and Justice approved the Practice and Procedure Bill, 2023.
