NA to elect its speaker on April 22

Speaker’s seat has been empty since Asad Qaiser’s resignation on April 9

The National Assembly (NA) Secretariat on Wednesday announced that the election for the speaker slot would be held on April 22 during the session of the house at 3:00pm.

A local newspaper reported that the session, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon, will now be held on April 22.

The NA Secretariat said that acting speaker Qasim Suri modified the schedule under rule 49 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. Previously, it was publicized that the NA speaker election will be held on April 16. According to the revised schedule, the nomination papers for the NA speaker seat will be submitted tomorrow (Friday).

The speaker’s seat has been empty after the resignation of former speaker Asad Qaiser on April 9, who announced he was quitting as he refused to hold voting on the no-confidence resolution against Imran Khan last Saturday.

Qasim Suri is holding his NA membership and the deputy speaker slot due to an order by the Supreme Court. Secret balloting would be conducted for the NA speaker election according to Rule 9 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007.
