NAB chairman will be paid similar to SC judge

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman would be paid an amount comparable to that of a Supreme Court justice, according to a government announcement.

The accountability watchdog’s main norms and regulations for employment will be similar to those of a Supreme Court judge, according to a notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice.

According to the notification, NAB director Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmad will receive a monthly salary of Rs. 1.7 million in addition to an official house and two automobiles.

Also, the NAB chief will receive up to 2,000 units of free electricity and 600 liters of free petrol each month. Additionally, he would be allowed to get two kanal plots in Islamabad.

Lt Gen (retd) Ahmad was named NAB chairman by the federal government earlier this month for a three-year term.

The nomination was made by the federal government, according to a notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice, following an agreement between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz.

According to the notification, the position of NAB chairman became vacant on February 15 when Aftab Sultan’s resignation was accepted.

Both parties concurred on the selection of Lt Gen (retd) Ahmad after “extensive deliberations.”

The law ministry states that the NAB chairman would serve a “non-extendable term of three years” and is ineligible for re-appointment.

The announcement also said that the chairman could not be removed from office other than for the reasons and in the ways specified in Article 209 of the Constitution.
