Nawaz’s return of no significance: Sh Rashid

Interior minister says mini-budget Imran Khan's effort to eradicate poverty

Dismissing rumours regarding former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s ‘planned’ return to Pakistan as “useless chatter”, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Wednesday said such a development would make “no difference” to the government.

Talking to the media after addressing a ceremony at the under-construction Mother and Child Hospital, Rashid said “unnecessary hype” was being created around Nawaz Sharif’s return, adding that it was unfortunate for Pakistan that people “who spent most of their life here eventually leave the country instead of loving it”. He said his offer of a one-way ticket to Pakistan for Nawaz was still up for grabs.

On Sunday, the interior minister had accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo of attacking the judiciary and giving statements against the army while sitting abroad.

In his conversation with reporters on Wednesday, Rashid insisted that the Pakistan Army and institutions were dedicated to serve the country, saying “governments come and go, but the establishment stands with the elected government”. He said the previously elected governments also completed its five years, but their leaders had to depart due to court orders.

The minister also said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, would not only complete its tenure but come to power again.

About the hospital, Rashid said the Mother and Child Hospital Rawalpindi costing Rs6 billion, as well as Nullah Leh and Ring Road projects would be completed before the end of the PTI government’s tenure.

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan would inaugurate Mother and Child Hospital on February 28, 2022.

Replying to a question about the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) planned long march on March 23, the minister said that everybody knew that on March 23, the national parade was to be held in Islamabad and before the parade; roads were to be closed for preparation.

He said he had asked the PDM to come to the federal capital on March 30, adding that no one would be allowed to take the law into their hands, and if they did, the law would take its course.
