Shae Gill might be one of the most admirable contemporary singers of Pakistan but netizens are not really happy with her recent cover of the late legend Nusrat Fateh Ali’s popular Punjabi song ‘Dholna’.
Although the cover went viral all over the internet within seconds, appealing to many young admirers of Shae Gill, a majority comprising of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s fans and of classical music in general did not appreciate it, saying that it might sound like a good effort but some of the very technical nuances of classical music are missing from Gill’s rendition. A few did not admire the effort at all, saying that popularity never means that one starts playing with the works of legends like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
Initially a singer confined to Instagram videos, Shae Gill achieved immense popularity when she featured along with Ali Sethi in Coke Studio’s latest season for the song ‘Pasoori’ which is now a global phenomenon and has once again taken Pakistani pop music to a next level after almost two decades. Besides admiring Ali Sethi whom everyone already knew for being a polished musician and singer, people were taken by surprise with Shae Gill’s vocals, who lent her beautiful voice to the song.
