No clear cue from PML-Q for govt team

Allied party puts forth problems it faced in present government’s tenure

A high-powered government delegation comprising senior cabinet members visited PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on Saturday to get the support of Chaudhry brothers over the opposition’s no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan but did not get any assurance.

PTI Vice Chairman Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Federal Minister for Defense Pervez Khattak called on Elahi. PML-Q’s federal ministers Tariq Bashir Cheema and Moonis Elahi were also present in the meeting. According to the statement issued by PML-Q, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere in which issues of mutual interest, including the political situation of the country, were discussed.

Qureshi and Khattak conveyed the message of Prime Minister Imran Khan to the PML-Q leadership. Tariq Bashir Cheema apprised the visitors of the problems their party has been facing for the last three and a half years. The PTI leaders said that they would inform Prime Minister Imran Khan about the whole situation. Speaking about the meeting, Parvez Elahi said that the party would take Ch Shujaat Hussain into confidence and the next meeting would be held in Islamabad soon. It is worth mentioning here that the PML-Q did not agree to support the government in Saturday’s meeting.

Qureshi said after the meeting that it was part of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s efforts “to approach its allies” and termed it “fantastic”. When asked by a reporter whether any “success has been achieved”, the foreign minister replied, “Allah has never sent [us back] empty-handed.” Khattak was asked whether PM Imran would be sent packing, to which he said, “God forbid that it happens.”

The PML-Q, which has five seats in the National Assembly, is a key ally of the PTI in the centre as well as Punjab, and the opposition would require its votes in order for the no-trust move against the premier to succeed.
