No govt in Punjab is willing to undertake LG elections: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja has said that no government in Punjab is willing to undertake local government (LG) elections.

On Tuesday, according to local media reports, an appeal regarding the local government elections in the province was considered by a three-member bench led by the top election commissioner.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) special secretary, the delimitation of constituencies had previously been completed twice in the province and now a third time was required.

He said, “A copy of the rolls is necessary.”

The commission was informed by acting Punjab Chief Secretary Abdullah Khan Sumbal that the demarcation would be finished shortly and that a distinct seat will be created for every 25,000 people.

CEC Raja while addressing the chief secretary said, “Please provide us guarantees if the LG elections are to be held on the basis of the new law.”

He remarked, “No administration is willing to conduct the LG elections,” and he gave the provincial secretary instructions to write the Supreme Court a letter stating this matter.

However, Sumbal informed the election watchdog that a new bill had been approved by the Punjab Assembly and would go into effect in another 10 days. Let’s adhere to the new law. We will adhere to the schedule, he continued.

CEC Raja expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation and asked if he thought electronic voting machines (EVMs) could be used to run the elections, asking, “Are you putting EVMs on purpose to create problems?”

He stated, “We would pass an order on the local bodies elections in Punjab.”
