Pakistan registers highest COVID-19 positivity in five months

COVID-19 positivity ratio in Pakistan has hit a five-month high, with the country registering an infection rate of 5.46 percent in 24 hours as of Tuesday morning.

Data from the National Institute of Health (NIH) has shown that the country had previously recorded such a high positivity ratio in February, when it was 5.55 percent. At the time, the number of deaths were 40.

According the national health monitor, 4,674 tests were conducted across the country in the past 24 hours, and 255 persons were found to have been infected by COVID-19.

Moreover, 141 patients are currently critical and are being treated in intensive care units (ICU).

Meanwhile, one death from the virus has been reported in the last 24 hours, with the total death toll since the start of the pandemic reaching 30,424.

Medical experts have put the blame of the rising cases on sub-variants of Omicron variant – BA.4 and BA.5. They have also said that escape mutations had given the sub-variants an edge.

Experts have also said that the sub-variants had even infected those who were already vaccinated or infected with the virus. However, they add, there was yet no evidence to indicate prevalence of severe disease among the vaccinated.
