WASHINGTON: Pakistan and the United States have made significant progress toward a bilateral trade agreement following two days of negotiations in Washington, with officials from both sides reporting constructive discussions aimed at finalising the deal in the near future.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, the latest round of trade negotiations was held on July 9 and 10 in the US capital. The talks took place in what the spokesperson described as a “cordial and positive atmosphere,” reflecting both countries’ commitment to strengthening economic cooperation.
The discussions focused on narrowing remaining differences and advancing negotiations to bring the proposed bilateral trade agreement closer to completion. Officials said both delegations engaged in detailed consultations across a range of trade-related issues in an effort to build consensus and reach mutually beneficial outcomes.
The spokesperson noted that meaningful progress had been achieved during the meetings, with negotiators working to resolve outstanding issues that have delayed the agreement.
The Pakistani delegation was led by the country’s Commerce Secretary, who welcomed the progress made during the talks and praised the constructive engagement shown by both sides throughout the negotiations.
Officials believe the proposed agreement could further expand trade, encourage investment and strengthen commercial ties between Pakistan and the United States. Improved market access and enhanced economic cooperation are expected to be among the key objectives of the negotiations.
The latest discussions come as Pakistan seeks to deepen trade partnerships with major global economies while pursuing export-led economic growth. The United States remains one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners, making the proposed agreement strategically important for businesses in both countries.
Although no final agreement has yet been announced, the positive tone of the negotiations has raised expectations that remaining issues could be resolved in the coming rounds of dialogue.
Analysts say a successful trade agreement could create new opportunities for exporters, attract foreign investment and boost bilateral economic relations at a time when both countries are looking to strengthen commercial cooperation amid evolving global trade dynamics.
The Washington talks mark another step forward in Pakistan-US economic engagement, with both governments signalling their willingness to continue negotiations until a mutually acceptable agreement is reached. If concluded, the deal could open a new chapter in bilateral trade relations and provide long-term benefits for businesses, investors and consumers in both countries.
