Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that Pakistan cannot remain a silent observer in the face of terrorist attacks and will exercise its right to self-defense whenever necessary to protect its security and citizens.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, he said that terrorist groups continue to use Afghan territory as a safe haven. He named organizations such as the TTP, BLA, Majeed Brigade, ISIS-K, and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement among the groups operating from Afghanistan.
Ahmad noted that the international community expected the Taliban to take action against these groups. However, he said the Taliban have failed to address the legitimate security concerns of Pakistan and other countries.
He added that nearly five years have passed since the Taliban returned to power, and many had hoped this would bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. Pakistan, he said, has supported the Afghan people through humanitarian assistance, political engagement, and efforts to encourage dialogue.
The Pakistani envoy also highlighted measures aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, including incentives and transit facilities. He said Pakistan expected the Taliban administration to take responsible governance steps and lead Afghanistan toward greater stability and development.
Ahmad emphasized that terrorism has remained one of Afghanistan’s most serious challenges for decades, with its consequences affecting neighboring countries and the wider region.
