Pakistan welcomes P-5 statement on preventing nuclear war

Foreign Office says agreement can pave way for tangible actions for strategic stability

Pakistan has welcomed the joint statement by the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (P-5) on preventing nuclear war and avoiding arms races, calling the step a positive development.

The Foreign Office spokesperson Asim Iftikhar said in a statement, that the agreement could set the way for concrete actions at both the world and regional levels.

He added that Pakistan supported the goals of a global nuclear disarmament harmonized with the terms of the First Special Session on Disarmament of the UN General Assembly (SSOD-I).

Iftikhar said the statement acknowledged the need of making a favorable security environment for significant progress on nuclear disarmament.

This includes dealing with the security concerns of different states, setting pending disputes and stopping arms buildups, he added.

Speaking in the context of South Asia, the spokesperson said that Pakistan’s proposal for a Strategic Restraint Regime could aid in the maintenance of a strategic ability whilst avoiding conflict. He said that the agreement would also include abjuring any ideas of war in a nuclearized space.

Iftikhar concluded that Pakistan fully supports the requirement for concrete steps by all nuclear armed nations to protect against any unauthorized use of nuclear weapons.
