Pakistan’s senior military officials seek early retirement

Lt. Gen. Faiz Hamid and Lt. Gen. Azhar Abbas decide to take early retirement.

Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid, one of Pakistan’s senior military officials has decided to take early retirement from the army.

According to local media news citing family sources, Pakistan Army’s Chief of General Staff (CGS) Lt. General Azhar Abbas had also requested an early retirement the day before news of Lt. General Hamid’s retirement.

The six army officers proposed by the General Headquarters for the position of army chief included the said two military personnel.

CGS Lt. Gen. Azhar Abbas’s brother as per local media confirms the news of early retirement.

To maintain his grace, honour, and dignity as a decorated officer of the Pakistani Army, he stated, “I confirm that Lt. Gen. Azhar Abbas has sought an earlier retirement.”

According to a family source cited by local media, “Lt. Ge.n Azhar Abbas, known for his expertise, foresight, and leadership, has decided to bid farewell and seek early retirement – true to his personality.”

It should be recalled that Lt. Gen. Hamid oversaw Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence while Imran Khan served as prime minister.

The change occurred two days after the federal government named Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Lt. Gen. Asim Munir as the next Chief of Army Staff.
