PEMRA’s action sought against live telecast of Nawaz’s speech

A lawyer on Monday wrote a letter to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to explain its position as to why it allowed live telecast of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Nawaz Sharif’s speech.

Advocate Azhar Siddique sent the letter to the regulator and sought its opinion.
The lawyer said that Nawaz was wanted in different cases and PEMRA had issued a notification under which it had banned live coverage of the PML-N Supremo, holding the act was against the rules of the authority.

“PEMRA on Oct 1st, 2020 has declared that the speeches of a fugitive cannot be telecast,” read the letter while referring to the ban on Nawaz’s speeches. He said that the telecast of Nawaz’s speech was against the rules of the authority.

Azhar asked PEMRA to make announcements on TV channels about the ban on Nawaz’s speeches and take action against all those channels, which aired his speech on Sunday.
He warned that if the authority fails to maintain its writ regarding the implementation of rules then he has the right to approach the relevant courts.
