Dr. Parvez Hassan Center of Chinese Legal Studies (PHCCLS), at the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), commemorated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China with profound enthusiasm, intellectual depth, and diplomatic significance. The landmark occasion celebrated one of the most enduring, resilient, and strategically consequential bilateral relationships in contemporary international affairs—an ironclad partnership founded upon mutual trust, shared aspirations, and unwavering solidarity. The event served not merely as a ceremonial observance, but as a reflection upon seven and a half decades of historic cooperation, visionary leadership, and an enduring friendship that continues to shape the geopolitical and economic landscape of the region.

The diplomatic relationship between Pakistan and China formally commenced in 1951, when Pakistan became among the first Muslim-majority nations to officially recognize the People’s Republic of China. This historic decision laid the foundation for a relationship that has since evolved into an exemplary model of interstate cooperation and strategic partnership. Over the course of seventy-five years, the two countries have cultivated a unique bond that transcends conventional diplomacy, emerging as an “all-weather strategic cooperative partnership” grounded in political trust, mutual respect, and converging regional and global interests.

Despite shifting geopolitical dynamics, regional conflicts, economic transitions, and transformations in the international order, Pakistan-China relations have remained remarkably steadfast and consistent. The resilience of this partnership has often been cited by scholars and diplomats alike as a rare example of continuity and reliability in modern international relations. Successive generations of leadership in both countries have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, ensuring that the friendship not only endures but flourishes across every sphere of cooperation.

The friendship between Pakistan and China has famously been described as “higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the sea, and sweeter than honey,” a characterization that encapsulates both the emotional depth and strategic significance of bilateral relations. Over the decades, the two nations have supported one another at critical moments in history, standing side by side on matters of regional peace, sovereignty, and international diplomacy. From close coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral forums to cooperation in defense, trade, infrastructure, science, education, technology, and cultural exchange, the relationship has evolved into a multidimensional partnership of immense strategic value.

Historically, Pakistan played a pivotal diplomatic role in facilitating the rapprochement between China and the United States during the early 1970s—a development widely recognized as one of the defining moments of twentieth-century diplomacy. This contribution underscored Pakistan’s strategic importance and its commitment to fostering constructive international engagement. Since then, bilateral cooperation has expanded steadily and comprehensively, strengthening political trust and deepening people-to-people connections between the two nations.

One of the most iconic manifestations of Pakistan-China friendship remains the construction of the historic Karakoram Highway during the 1960s and 1970s. Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the highway symbolizes far more than physical connectivity; it stands as a monumental testament to sacrifice, perseverance, engineering excellence, and the indomitable spirit of friendship shared by the peoples of Pakistan and China. The arduous construction process claimed the lives of numerous Pakistani and Chinese workers and engineers, whose sacrifices continue to be honored as a lasting symbol of brotherhood and collective resolve.

In recent decades, Pakistan-China relations have entered a transformative and economically dynamic phase through China’s visionary Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), particularly the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), widely regarded as the flagship project of the initiative. CPEC has fundamentally reshaped Pakistan’s developmental landscape through extensive investments in infrastructure, transportation networks, energy generation, industrial zones, and port development. These initiatives have not only strengthened regional connectivity and economic integration but have also generated new opportunities for trade, investment, industrial growth, and technological advancement.

China’s invaluable contributions toward Pakistan’s modernization efforts—including the expansion of highways, enhancement of agricultural capacity, promotion of technological innovation, and advancement of industrial cooperation—have significantly accelerated Pakistan’s socio-economic development. Furthermore, strategic collaboration in defense and security has reinforced Pakistan’s national defense capabilities and contributed to maintaining regional stability in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. The relationship between the two countries today represents not merely a strategic alliance, but a comprehensive partnership aimed at achieving shared prosperity, sustainable development, and regional peace.

Against this historic backdrop, PHCCLS organized a distinguished commemorative ceremony attended by prominent diplomats, academics, legal scholars, policymakers, students, and members of civil society. The event served as both a celebration of diplomatic milestones and an intellectual platform for reflecting upon the enduring significance of Pakistan-China relations in shaping the future of regional cooperation and global engagement.

Among the distinguished dignitaries present were the Chinese Consul General in Lahore, Shahid Hussain; Rector of LUMS, Ambassador Shahid Malik; Provost of LUMS, Dr. Tariq Jadoon; eminent jurist and Member of the Board of Directors at LUMS, Dr. Parvez Hassan; Director of PHCCLS, Dr. Sikander Shah; and Dean of SAHSOL, Dr. Sadaf. The ceremony was elegantly moderated by Ms. Minahil Toor, whose professionalism, dedication, and intellectual engagement continue to contribute significantly to the academic and cultural mission of PHCCLS.

A compelling documentary film screened dsuring the ceremony offered a moving tribute to the historic evolution of Pakistan-China relations, particularly highlighting the sacrifices made by Chinese workers and engineers during the construction of the Karakoram Highway. The documentary featured the Yadgar-e-Shuhada memorial and the majestic Khunjerab Pass, both of which stand as enduring symbols of friendship, sacrifice, resilience, and cross-border connectivity between the two neighboring nations.

PHCCLS continues to play a pioneering role in advancing Pakistan-China academic, legal, cultural, and intellectual engagement. The Center offers a wide range of specialized educational initiatives, including Chinese language courses conducted by Hui Ci and the Chinese Executive Program (CEP), designed for aspiring entrepreneurs, professionals, scholars, and future leaders seeking to strengthen business, legal, academic, and institutional collaboration between Pakistan and China. Through these initiatives, PHCCLS is fostering intellectual exchange, promoting intercultural understanding, and preparing a new generation capable of contributing meaningfully to the future trajectory of bilateral cooperation.

The ceremony concluded with a commemorative cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing not only the celebration of seventy-five years of diplomatic relations but also the enduring legacy of mutual respect, strategic trust, and fraternal goodwill shared by Pakistan and China. More than a reflection on the past, the event reaffirmed the collective commitment of both nations to further deepen their partnership and jointly pursue peace, prosperity, innovation, regional connectivity, and sustainable development in the decades ahead. As Pakistan and China enter a new chapter in their historic relationship, the spirit of friendship and cooperation that has defined the past seventy-five years continues to illuminate a shared vision for a more interconnected, stable, and prosperous future.

It is pertinent to note that, as a gesture of goodwill and enduring friendship, Pakistan has announced the issuance of a commemorative Rs75 coin to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China, underscoring the deep-rooted strategic partnership between the two nations. The coin will officially enter circulation from May 25, 2026, through the field offices of the State Bank of Pakistan Banking Services Corporation nationwide. Minted in copper-nickel alloy, the coin features a crescent and star on the obverse side, while the reverse bears the inscription “75th Anniversary of Pakistan-China Diplomatic Relations” alongside the words “Trust, Friendship, Support,” symbolizing the enduring bonds between Islamabad and Beijing.
