PM reaches Beijing for four-day diplomatic visit

PM Imran Khan to attend Winter Olympics opening ceremony to express solidarity with China

Prime Minister Imran Khan has reached Beijing on a four-day visit to China to take part in the launch ceremony of the Winter Olympics and hold bilateral talks with Chinese leadership.

The foreign minister, finance minister, planning minister, information minister, national security adviser, trade adviser also accompanied PM Khan. Special Assistant to Prime Minister Khalid Mansoor was also present.

The PM was visiting at the invitation of the Chinese leadership and would attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. He would also discuss bilateral relations and important issues with the Chinese leadership including President Xi Jinping and premier Li Keqiang.

The Foreign Office (FO) had earlier announced that PM Khan was set to leave for China on Thursday, along with senior government officials and members of the cabinet.

They two sides were expected to focus on strengthening trade and economic cooperation as well as exchange views on regional and international issues.

The FO statement said that Khan’s visit would mark the conclusion of celebrations honouring the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan.

Over 140 events were organized to mark the All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership. The visit would revitalize the commitment to further enhance the partnership between Pakistan and China.

The foreign office said that the premier would also conclude numerous memoranda of understanding and agreements. He would also hold meetings with important businessmen, leaders of Chinese think-tanks, and prominent Chinese personalities from academia and media fields.

The PM would also attend the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in order to express solidarity with Beijing as multiple western nations have diplomatically boycotted the event.
