PM Shehbaz appointed vice chairman of UN Climate Change Conference 2022

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been appointed as the vice-chair of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022, also known as COP-27, on Monday.

Out of 195 UN members, Pakistan has been given the honor for voicing the issues of climate change at global as well as regional forums.

PML-N shared the news on its official twitter handle that PM Shehbaz has been named the vice president of the UN Climate Change Organization. It has further stated that Pakistan has been honored for best representation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) regarding climate change.

PM Shehbaz will jointly chair the conference along with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Egyptian President El-Sisi. The premier had raised the issue at the SCO Council Heads of States meeting and also at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

At UNGA, he had highlighted the issues of climate change and the catastrophic floods in Pakistan. He had urged upon the meaningful initiatives that were needed to be taken by the developed countries. He had also urged a fresh global charter so that all countries vulnerable due to adverse effects of climate change could be assisted.

French President Macron had said in the meeting that he was so moved by the sufferings of the Pakistanis that he wanted to take the lead to organize a global conference so that Pakistan’s flood affected areas’ rehabilitation could be determined.

The COP-27 would be an important opportunity for the PM Shehbaz so that the issue could be highlighted and the developed countries would be urged to abide by the provisions of the Paris Agreement 2015.
