PM Shehbaz appoints Asim Munir as Pakistan’s new army chief

The federal government announced Lt. Gen. Asim Munir as Pakistan’s next chief of army staff (COAS) on Thursday.

PM Shehbaz also appointed Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the government’s decision in a tweet where she stated that the summary has been sent to the President of Pakistan.

She stated that the premier had exercised his constitutional rights in making the decision

The defence minister Khawaja Asif said that the President should concur with the advice of the prime minister to avoid “a controversy”. “This will also assist in the recovery of our nation’s economy.

In a tweet, he made the same statement and stated that the president had been advised. He continued by saying that the former prime minister Imran Khan would now face a test in which he would have the opportunity to either enhance the institution charged with defending the nation or create controversy.

This is also a test for President Alvi, he added, to see if he will follow legal and constitutional advice or political assistance.

He stated, “He must defend the country from political problems as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.”

The decision was made public when PM Shehbaz convened a federal cabinet meeting to discuss the selections after receiving permission from the allied parties to choose the officers for the top positions.
