Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a 10,000-megawatt solar energy project to cut the cost of diesel and furnace oil imports.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the choice during a meeting organized to consider ways to offer “major relief to the masses”.

According to state media, PM Shehbaz emphasized to the relevant authorities that electricity should be generated through solar instead of imported fuel.

The solar scheme will help save billions of dollars.

During the first phase of the project, government buildings, tube wells using electricity and fuel, and household users with minimal demand would all receive solar energy.

The PM instructed the pertinent authorities to guarantee that solar plants were installed as soon as possible in order to bring respite to the public before the next summer season.

He also asked the authorities to immediately start the implementation of the project.

PM Shehbaz said that a conference of all interested parties will be held by next week before the bidding process.

The prime minister announced last month that the government will soon begin 6,000MW to 7,000MW solar energy projects, in an effort to reduce reliance on imported fuel.
