PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif and PTI’s Shah Mahmood to vie for PM seat

Nomination papers for both leaders accepted

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi have filed nomination papers for the position of the prime minister of Pakistan.

The position for the prime minister fell vacant after former PM Imran Khan lost the vote of no-confidence in the National Assembly in a process that lasted the whole day and saw the speaker of the house, Asad Qaiser, resign.

The session of the lower house to elect the prime minister will be convened at 2:00pm on Monday.

Shehbaz Sharif filed his nomination papers and was accompanied by Shahid Khaqan, Naveed Qamar, Khursheed Shah and Mohsin Dawar.

Four forms were submitted by Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the National Assembly Secretariat while Shehbaz Sharif submitted 13 forms.

During the process, objections were raised to Shehbaz’s nomination which resulted in an altercation between Qureshi and PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal.

PTI’s Babar Awan stated that Shehbaz Sharif had cases pending against him and hence his papers should be rejected. The concerns were rejected and both Qureshi’s and Shehbaz’s nomination papers were accepted.

In his comments to media following the submission, Shehbaz Sharif stated that national harmony was his top priority, adding that people would experience relief after the economy received a boost.

Shehbaz apprised media that he would make a new cabinet after consulting with fellow opposition leaders.

He added that they would start a new era and would promote a culture of respect for each other.
