Police arrest teachers for protesting in Peshawar

Forces used baton charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd and arrested dozens

A demonstration was held in Peshawar by the teacher’s association on Thursday demanding an increase in their pay scales and the reinstatement of their allowances in Peshawar.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Primary School Teachers Association stated that all government primary schools in the province would remain closed on Friday to register protests against the brutal police action.

Earlier on Thursday in response to the association’s appeal, the teachers shut down over 15,000 government primary schools for boys throughout the province so that they could attend the protest.

The Khyber road was blocked by thousands of teachers protesting outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, causing traffic jams on the busiest streets of the city.

The police baton-charged the protesters and shot tear gas at them to guarantee that the protestors dispersed.

Many protesters were detained by the police. However, they didn’t file FIRs against them until after night.

According to a statement from the city police, six police officers were hurt by the stones that were thrown by the teachers in retaliation, and several media cars were also damaged.

According to the police, SSP (operation) Kashif Aftab Abbasi was among the injured officials who were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Special Assistant to CM KP, Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, stated that the police action against teachers could have been prevented. He responded, “Whatever happened is regrettable”.
