Polls to be held after electoral reforms: PM Shehbaz

Premier says final decision to be made after consultations with allies

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that his party would move towards holding elections in the country only after carrying out the necessary electoral reforms.

Speaking with media at an iftar-dinner at the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday, the prime minister said that the final decision would be made after consulting with the allies. He said that there were still one and a half years remaining of the current assemblies.

Responding to a question, PM Shehbaz said that if anyone was involved in unnecessary criticism of the military and state institutions, then he should face the law. He said that the law should take its course against any and all wrong doings. He lamented the fact that the National Accountability Bureau was used by the previous government for its own political goals.

He said his government was faced with major challenges to control inflation, unemployment, and poverty in the country. The premier added that a short and medium term plan would be made after the formation of the cabinet to bring an improvement in the economy.

Earlier during the day, PM Shehbaz chaired a meeting of the economic team in which he ordered them to prepare proposals and recommendations to deal with the economic challenges faced by the country.
