Former leader of house Shehzad Waseem to become leader of Opposition in Senate

Pakistan People’s Party heavyweight Yousaf Raza Gillani is set to take charge as the leader of the House in the Senate today, and hold the first session of the upper house under the current government.

Gillani was selected to fill the slot by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He had been serving as the opposition when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government was in power. Senator Dr. Shehzad Waseem will now become the leader of the Opposition. The Senate chairman has issued an official notification in the regard. Waseem was the leader of the House under the PTI government.

Previously, former premier Gillani had contested for the Senate chairman slot against Sadiq Sanjrani. However, seven votes which were cast in Gillani’s favor were rejected by the then chairman.

Gillani is presently fighting his case against the result of the election in the superior courts.

Senate is currently in its 20th parliamentary year with the 318th session of the upper House being held today in a tense political situation.

The current session of the National Assembly will also recommence today. Local media reported that a resolution of condemnation against PTI Chairman Imran Khan for using derogatory language against Maryam Nawaz in his Multan rally will be tabled today. The resolution would likely be tabled in the twin houses separately by women lawmakers.
